江戸の河原に辻斬りが現われ、街は騒然となる。一方、南町奉行所では、江戸随一と言われる剣術師範の笠原監物（目黒祐樹）と息子・太平（浜田学）を招いて、指南を受けることになった。剣術の稽古と聞いて、見廻り同心・渡辺小五郎（東山紀之）や自身番の中村主水（藤田まこと）は憂鬱な気分に。 一方、源太（大倉忠義）は、往来で若侍たちに絡まれたところを、佐藤数馬（忍成修吾）という若者に助けられる。彼は笠原の道場で剣の腕を磨く剣士であった。数馬の気持ちの良い人柄と、貧しさに負けずに息子を支える母・みち（賀来千香子）の優しさに触れ、心の和む源太。
